Cycling champion Lance Armstrong suffered a broken collarbone after falling during the first stage of a five-day race in Spain.

After emerging from a hospital with his arm in a sling, the seven-time Tour de France winner said he'll return to the U.S. so doctors can determine whether he needs surgery, CNN reports. "I'm miserable. I just need to relax a couple of days and then make a plan," Armstrong was quoted as saying.

Armstrong is making a comeback to cycling and was riding with the Astana team in Spain's Vuelta of Castilla and Leon race. A spokesman for the team said the crash -- involving a group of 15 to 20 riders about 20 kilometers from the finish line -- will likely keep Armstrong out for three to four weeks.
