Tom Hanks Going to the Moon

It's not the first time Tom Hanks has played an astronaut, but this time he'll actually make it to the moon!

Hanks has been chosen to play the lead in 'Major Matt Mason,' a live-action feature based on Mattel's astronaut action figure developed in the 1960s, Variety reports. Universal Pictures will develop the film as a star vehicle for Hanks, who will also co-produce, the trade paper says.

The toy line -- featuring Mason leading an astronaut team that lived and worked on the moon -- became popular in the buildup to the first manned moon mission, but was retired in the 1970s.

In the movie 'Apollo 13,' Hanks played astronaut Jim Lovell, who commanded the Apollo 13 mission in 1970 that suffered an explosion while traveling to the Moon but was brought back safely to Earth by the efforts of the crew and mission control.

  • I really wish Tom Hanks would go to the moon and stay there and never make another movie again.
