American Idol Group Performances Lip-synced

A rep for American Idol has reportedly admitted that the group performances are lip-synced, according to the New York Times (via MSNBC). Justin Guarini, co-host of Idol Wrap on the TV Guide Network said:

“Every single year we can’t stand the group performances. And I think what makes them even worse now is that they’re lip-synched.”

However, a rep for the Idol producers denied the allegation saying:

“The Idols don’t lip-sync, period.”

Then later, the rep wrote in an email:

“Due to extensive choreography and to balance their voices with open mikes against a screaming audience, the Idols do sing along to their own prerecorded vocal track during the group performances only.”

I’m not surprised about this news one bit! They should just fill the time with something else because those performances are SO cheesy and not worth watching at all. During that time, I usually have the sound turned down really low and don’t pay attention to them moving around trying to dance. I know they have to fill the hour, but maybe they should go back to letting audience members or fans call-in with questions instead because the song & dance is horrible to watch.

  • What's the big deal, as long as they sing their solo songs live! Which we know they do.

  • Thank goodness! The group numbers in past years have been a train wreck, so I'm glad they are lip syncing them.
