A somber-looking Brown appeared in a Los Angeles courtroom Monday dressed in a cardigan, wearing a shirt and tie underneath.
The R&B singer pleaded not guilty to one count of assault and one of making criminal threats related to an alleged domestic violence incident perpetrated against pop star Rihanna. He is due back in court on April 29.
The criminal complaint against Brown states that in an alleged incident in February, Brown "did willfully and unlawfully commit an assault on ROBYN F. by means of force likely to produce great bodily injury." R&B star Rihanna's real name has been reported as Robyn Rihanna Fenty.
The second count states that Brown "did willfully and unlawfully threaten to commit a crime which would result in death and great bodily injury to ROBYN F., with the specific intent that the statement be taken as a threat." The complaint alleges that Rihanna "was reasonably in sustained fear of her safety and the safety of her immediate family."
If convicted on both counts, the sentence could range from as little as probation to a maximum sentence of up to four years, eight months in prison.
