Stars trek to Australia for new Enterprise voyage

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) — "Star Trek" has had its world premiere. And the new cast aboard the starship Enterprise is showing a lot of respect for their predecessors.

The 11th big-screen film in the sci-fi series has had its maiden voyage in Tuesday's premiere at the Sydney Opera House in Australia.

Among the stars: Chris Pine, who takes on William Shatner's old role as James Kirk; Zachary Quinto, who inherits Leonard Nimoy's Mr. Spock; and Eric Bana, who plays a villainous Romulan.

Pine says he wrote a letter of introduction to Shatner after his casting as Kirk. Quinto says he's become very close with Nimoy, who reprises his role as the older Spock. And John Cho — who plays Mr. Sulu — says he's not doing a copy of the original actor, George Takei.
