The Washington Post reports that the Obama's new dog, named Bo, is a six-month-old Portuguese water dog.

The paper says that first daughters Malia and Sasha Obama named their new pooch Bo after their cousins' cat, also named Bo, and after First Lady Michelle Obama's father, who was reportedly nicknamed Diddley (i.e. Bo Diddley).

The handsome pup was supposed to be kept a secret until Tuesday, but after details began leaking on the Internet Saturday, the White House opted to release photos of the First Family enjoying their new best friend early.

The Post adds that President Obama and the First Lady actually first introduced their daughters to Bo a few weeks ago at the White House -- the pooch's surprise, initial visit with the family was dubbed "The Meeting" by White House staffers.

  • this seems like a clever political move to avoid explantions of not getting a pound dog. I wish they had just stayed true to the truth: they needed a dog that doesn't shed, due to the issue of allergies.
