The Mean Girls star was due to start filming with the veteran actress, along with Rosario Dawson and Olympia Dukakis for the new project, which will be co-produced by MacLaine and Rob Hickman.
But Lohan checked herself into the Promises rehab facility in Malibu, California on Monday - after she was arrested for driving under the influence at the weekend - throwing the filming schedule into doubt.
And despite the 20-year-old’s highly-publicised personal battles, MacLaine and Hickman have vowed to stand by her as she completes a month-long treatment programme in rehab.
The producers released a statement yesterday, saying, “In the spirit of helping Lindsay Lohan and her rehabilitation, we have been asked by Lindsay to comply with her wishes to continue working on ‘Poor Things’.
“We are trying to rearrange the shooting schedule to facilitate her working at the end of the shoot to coincide with the completion of her rehabilitation.
We wish her love and the blending of mind, body and spirit.”
Meanwhile Lohan has pulled out of filming The Edge Of Love because producers demanded she take a drugs test first, according to reports.
Lohan pulled out of the Dylan Thomas movie last month citing contractual issues, and was replaced by Sienna Miller.
But British website ThisIsLondon claims Lohan’s last minute decision was made when executives on set voiced concerns she might have a substance abuse problem - and demanded she take a test to prove she was clean.
The 20-year-old, who was arrested for driving under the influence on Saturday after crashing her Mercedes in Beverly Hills, California, entered the Promises clinic in Malibu on Monday to start a rehab program.
