"It was almost like a finale, or a sporting event," Paula told "Idol" host Ryan Seacrest on his KIIS FM morning show, On Air with Ryan Seacrest. "It was so frustrating, and nerve wracking and exciting at the same time because at one point I didn't even know what was going to happen here. But man it was the most exciting thing."
Matt received the lowest number of the more than 36 million votes cast by America, but he was saved from elimination by the judges for the first time in "Idol" history after he wowed the crowd with his rendition of Bryan Adams' "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?"
Paula says that it looked like fellow judge Simon Cowell wasn't feeling the love for Matt, and, "For a minute there I thought we were going to have to duke it out, because it seemed as though Simon had some trepidation about the whole thing. We couldn't let Matt go."
Matt will continue in competition next week as the top seven finalists perform songs of the disco era next Tuesday on FOX -- and two finalists will be eliminated the following day.
