Happy Earth Day

In 1970, visions of 'Planet of the Apes' and 'Soylent Green' painted a grim picture of the future, when concerns centered on over-population and war. The world population has since doubled, but progress has been made in trash recycling, strengthening the ozone, cleaning and protecting park lands and reducing water and air pollution in urban areas. The essential role of rainforests in the global ecosystem has received greater awareness.

At this moment in time, President Obama has wisely decided to bring the country and the world out of a global economic downturn in part by attacking the critical problem of global warming. By shifting the country to renewable, clean energy use, the US can be at the forefront of alternative energy technology while reducing carbon emissions and man-made pollution. The country's dangerous dependence on foreign oil has both direct and indirect costs, including military and environmental costs necessary to secure and extract depleting reserves.

The plan can be achieved in part by supporting the auto industry through this economic downturn with incentives to produce more hybrid and electric vehicles. Oil man T. Boone Pickens has put forth a very thoughtful energy plan and should be required reading on Earth Day [Pickens Plan]. In addition, the Big 3 automakers in the US should have a plan for building transportation for the 21st century in exchange for their government check.
