The former "American Idol" contestant says he is looking forward to the time he will spend in the jungles of Costa Rica, where the series will film, because he will use the time to work on music for his upcoming album. "We get to take one luxury item," he tells "The Insider." "I am going to take my guitar."
Sanjaya calls the music for his album "world pop fusion." He adds, "I start most of my songs with some kind of world sound. From there I bring in fusion, like maybe a funk bass, or rock, and cohesively mix that in with the world sound, and then my voice is pop/R&B. I put that on top and fuse them together."
The "Idol" contestant, famous for his varied hairdos on the show, isn't sure what he will be doing hair-wise for "I'm a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here," maybe dreds, but he credits "Idol" with giving him the opportunity.
"It has given me the opportunity to pursue something I wanted to do all my life. That is priceless," he says. "I am grateful for Simon Cowell being so critical because I wouldn't have been able to learn from what I did and make it as far as I did on the show without the criticism."
And speaking of criticism, Sanjaya handicaps the five remaining "American Idol" finalists for ET:
Adam Lambert: "I think that Adam is an incredibly innovative artist. No matter what happens, I think he is set in the industry. I think some people may be scared of him because he is so out there."
Allison Iraheta: "She is a sweetheart. You can never tell. It is about each week. At this point everyone can sing. Everyone is talented. With each week, it changes."
Danny Gokey: "I remember him from Hollywood week. He had the friend with the pierced cheek. He is incredibly talented"
Matt Giraud: "He is incredibly talented."
Kris Allen: "He has appeal. People ask me this question all the time, and I never know what to say. I can predict something, and it will change the next week."
