The Emmy and Tony award winning actress spun a recurring character on 'All in the Family' into her own show, 'Maude,' from 1972 to 1978. The show dealt with such hot button issues as homophobia, racism, menopause and abortion, and Ms. Arthur received 5 Emmy award nominations and one win.
She waded through a number of bad scripts and one-off variety specials before finding 'Golden Girls', which she starred in with fellow actors Estelle Getty, Rue McClanahan and Betty White. 'Golden Girls' ran from 1985 to 1992, and was a huge rating smash. Everyone in the ensemble won an Emmy award. Ms. Arthur decided to leave the show after 7 seasons when the ratings were still on top, and worked on stage and screen modestly thereafter. The 'Golden Girls' became a smash hit again in syndication with waves of new college-aged audiences.
In 2008, Ms. Arthur was inducted in the TV Academy Hall of Fame. [Source]
