George Clooney Reacts to Mia Farrow's Fast

George Clooney calls Mia Farrow "dedicated" to helping Sudan's Darfur, as the actress announced last week she would start a "fast of only water" to show her disdain for the events taking place in the troubled region.

"I ran into Mia in Chad this January. She'd been living in the camps and villages on the border of Darfur for weeks," Clooney said of the actress. "She is as dedicated to this cause as any activist I know. It's these kind of efforts that help keep this tragedy in the spotlight."

Farrow told the Associated Press her hunger strike is "a personal expression of outrage at a world that is somehow able to stand by and watch innocent men, women and children needlessly die of starvation, thirst and disease."

The 64-year-old actress decided to protest after the Sudanese government barred international aid agencies from Darfur last month. She is now asking for world leaders to "help build a credible peace process" to end the violence in this country, AP reports.

  • Hunger fasts that end after 12-days due to a doctor recommendation are lame. A hunger strike for a cause is a hunger strike until change or until death. She's an actress, not eating is probably normal for her. Bobby Sands

  • Perhaps it is time for the United Nations to prove their worth and take successful action to help those in Darfur and the many other countries around the World so that these people may live with basic human rights and be treated with respect.

  • Doesn't Mia Farrow's press officer need to let the papers know? and email all the Embassies and totally embarrass the Sudan Government for being so incredibly inhuman?

  • I think that the U.S. can avoid tricky foreign policy situations like Darfur by increasing the strategic foreign aid to give people an incentive to turn away from violence.

The has good info on the estimated cost of ending global poverty:

  • How can anyone rationally explain how those in the nations around this outrage can watch this happening and not lift a finger in protest or offer help. why do those with the power to help do nothing. surely they will face God one day and He will ask...

  • IT'S NICE THAT SHE IS TRYING TO HELP! BUT DON'T MAKE YOURSELF SICK BY FASTING. IF YOU BECOME VERY ILL YOU WON'T BE GOOD TO ANYONE,AND YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO HELP!
