Two Bahamian men pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges related to an alleged plot to extort millions from actor John Travolta following his son's death earlier this year.

Pleasant Bridgewater, a former senator, and Tarino Lightbourne, an ambulance driver, pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit extortion and aiding to attempted exortion, according to the Associated Press. They stand accused of asking Travolta for $25 million in order to keep a document secret, the news agency reports. The document was allegedly somehow connected with John's son with wife Kelly Preston, Jett, who passed away at age 16 on January 2.

The men are free on bail, and their trial is set to begin on September 21, the AP reports.

  • My heart truly goes out to the Travolta family. It's difficult enough to lose a child, and then to have to be put through this nonsense. It's absolutely ridiculous. The family needs this time to heal. May Jett's soul rest in peace.
