Megan Fox: We Will All Laugh At Gilded Butterflies

I Like It I Don't Like It
What's the meaning of Megan Fox's Tattoo? We Will All Laugh At Gilded Butterflies appears to be a reference to line from Shakespeare's King Lear:

Come, let's away to prison:
We too alone will sing like birds I' the cage;
When thou dost ask me blessing I'll kneel down
And ask of thee forgiveness; so we'll live,
And pray, and sing, and tell old tales, and laugh
At gilded butterflies...

-- King Lear to daughter Cordelia

Cordelia was the good daughter by the way. Maybe Megan Fox has daddy issues.

  • Sorta wordy for a Tatoo. Is she trying to seem all deep? Having a tat sort of cancels that out. Guilded Butterflies my butt.

    • So....having a tattoo (which, as exemplified here, has two t's, dimwit) automatically renders one incapable of having deep thoughts?

    • You're an idiot.

  • She was on one of the late night talk shows discussing it. Apparently she got it to remind herself that in Hollywood too often celebrities are put on up on pillars just to be knocked down and laughed at later. Take Britney Spears for instance, once at the top of her game and now she is a joke. Megan wanted to make sure she never allowed her head too become too inflated that she would ended being pulled down by the press.

  • Whatever she's hot... The tattoo obviously has a meaning to her, why else would anyone (not drunk) get a tattoo.

  • what's wrong with you plebs? the quote's about Lear realizing that his question to his three daughters and his wealth meant nothing to him. There are no gilded butterflies that can replace a daughter's loyalty and love. You'll need to understand the play to understand the quote. To her, I assume it's about the deceptive nature of hollywood and maintaining integrity. It's good to know that at least a few celebrities have some brains.

  • As a quote, these words mean so much, refering to Shakespeare's King Lear. But as a tattoo they become ridiculous and self mocking. Megan might have had the tattoo created to remind her how hollywood icons can be put on a pedalstool and then taken down, but it takes on a secondary meanining when inked on her back.
As was mentioned, Shakespeare was referring to the royal court and how they pumped up their own existance with fancy trappings, etc. But their is a second, more important meaning people are missing regarding 'Gilded Butterflies.'
Have you ever really looked at a butterfly up close. How gorgeous; beautiful; delicate; perfect.
To 'gild' a thing is to cover it in a thin layer of gold. To cheaply 'whore up' something under a thin facade. For ugly, things, it may be an improvement, at least superficially. Like painting an old scratched up lamp with a new gold coat of paint. But a butterfly?? Its already perfect. All you can do is ruin it. And secondly, if you cover a butterfly in gold, its useless. It will never fly, and die of course. It's as if the act of gilding a butterfly is a crime against nature and beauty. Now, when Shakespeare talks about the people in King Lear, he is saying that yes, they are self absorbed, bloated idiots who live in a world of false beauty they have created themselves. But he is also saying they they as humans, are already beautiful creatures. That people don't need to cover themselves in expensive clothes, or jewels. Their beauty is inherent, from God, or nature, or whatever you like.
Now, regarding Megan Fox. I am sure we can all agree she is absolutely beautiful. So why does she need to go and spoil such a remarkable creation with a tattoo? And I know some of you will say a tattoo only enhances the beauty. Ok, fine, even if I give you that, why pick a quote that is mocked with the very act of making it into a tattoo? Instead of making her look 'deep' or humble, it just makes her look silly. Sorry Megan, but I don't think you really thought that one out to the finish line.
If you read this one all the way through, good for you.

    Scott

    • WTF is a "Pedalstool"??
      anonymous anonymous 11/5/08

    • I bet a person who makes that comment is not deep enough to have a tattoo because probably the art they would come up with won't have any depth to it or maybe they just can't handle a little pain. Anyways nobody should judge anybody. For the record, though, a solid black tattoo is in no way flashy or "guilded". Silly fool.

    • Dear Scott,
That is such an interesting way of looking at this. You are right. It is a contradiction having that tattoo on her back. Seal
      anonymous anonymous 6/14/09

    • Um, what? By the way, you need to brush up on your spelling skills in a serious way!! I totally don't get what you're driving at. It's a contradiction because it's on her back? Where should it be . . . her face? I think it's a silly tattoo. I think she's trying to make a pretense of being smart and well read. But your interpretation of her tattoo seems just as pretentious, and meaningless.
      anonymous anonymous 6/18/09

    • How does getting that quote as a tattoo mock the quote?? Tattooed is not the same as "guilded" . . . especially not in the context that Shakespeare used the word. She is beautiful, and tattoos are beautiful . . . so WHERE'S the mocking?
      anonymous anonymous 6/18/09

    • The incongruity of the statement, as a tatoo, is kinda the point methinks.

For someone so "well read" you lack creativity.

  • Megan's Fox's decision to type such a large and silly tattoo on her back evidences the naivety of vanity. Ms. Fox's wealth, career, fame, and lifestyle are entirely dependant on her physical beauty. So great is her beauty, she assumes, that she can afford to scribe large words onto her skin that may or may not appeal to others. “What others think matters not”, she naively assumes. Little does she understand how fleeting is beauty and how fickle is fame.

The tattooed woman of today marks her age with this fashion trend just as surely as if she were to wear yesterday’s clothes for eternity. The post tattoo generation is sure to use tattooes to describe the “older generation” and use it as a source of painful humor fodder in times soon coming.

    • Maybe what others think does not matter to her, nor do I think it should matter to other individuals such as yourself. Personally, I think tattoos are beautiful, and no I do not have any of my own. Perhaps you should look at how you perceive yourself instead of how others perceive you, because that is what I think Megan Fox is doing. :)

      anonymous anonymous 4/11/09

  • The meaning of the tatoo really doesnt matter. Whether it was smart or stupid is simply a matter of opinion and thus again doesnt really matter. However, the fact that it is interesting and so many are willing to discuss it seems to be more to the point. I have no tatoos nor a desire to ever get one, but if I did, I would only hope to pick something which could be as discussed as hers. If sober I would probably choose some proverb from the Bible, if drunk ... hmmm "We're gonna need a bigger boat!"

  • For comment # 27 and your question "there was once a little girl who never knew love until a boy broke her heart"..what does this mean? Simply states one will never know true love until they have it and lose it. Another way of saying...I never realized how much I loved him/her until they are gone. Those that wear that tattoo have been pained by " true love" or know someone who has had that experience.

I never thought I would get a tattoo, nor ever thought to get a tattoo... When 4 of my friends died, I decided to get a tattoo with their initials... Tattoos are very personal and express deep emotions... And usually isn't understood by others... in fact, haven't you ever heard someone ask another person about their tattoo and what does it mean, etc? That's the whole point... you only share that knowledge with people you wish to share it with... others can just wonder and guess... Personally, you all sound like a bunch of haters.... for what? • Scott (and everyone else who is old and dumb and therefore clings to the negative stigma of tattoos), you are the typical old automaton who doesn't put any thought into anything. Your head is so far up your ass you think the whole world is brown. There is absolutely nothing wrong with getting a tattoo. It's a qualitative decision and any given reason you might quote as to why tattoos are bad can be voided by a simple statement: "I am aware of this and I don't care." Tattoos are art, and the preposterous, moronic, negative paradigm surrounding tattoos is coming to an end thanks to people like Megan Fox. This makes her even hotter.

    • Sorry, it might be art for some, but it is just tacky to so many others. Looking at the tattoo itself, why do you need a reminder on your back, she made it for attention, not a personal reminder, look at all the photos, it makes the tattoo hypocritical. Scott has a point, it goes against what it states ... like me getting a tattoo stating "Tattoos are tacky". Just a recap, no body stated tattoos where bad, but personal taste dictates I don't need the Mona Lisa etched on my arm or the Fred Flintstone on my cheeks. You're not open minded because you accept everything, your open minded because you try and tolerate new ideas and experiences and can still make up your own mind over your own personal tastes, otherwise your an automaton that agrees to everything that sounds rebellious and nonconforming ... hopefully your not a Hot Topic Beanie Baby .... that would be sad for your "cause" against the old automatons.

  • That quote is from Shakespeare's King Lear.I don't think Megan identified with this as it was meant but whatever....at least its not a tribal.

First let me identify or define some of the symbolism.

Butterflies: they symbolize both freedom and beauty.

Gilded: the art of applying metal leaf (most commonly gold or silver leaf) to a surface. Usually the object being coated or plated is less valuable the metal being applied.

The phrase "we will all laugh at gilded butterflies" symbolizes people originally being free and beautiful being weighed down or burdened by worldly possessions (i.e. money, gold, etc...)

In King Lear, he spoke these words regarding his daughters or people in the court being just as imprisoned as him by their own possessions and fortunes.

    • OMG THANK YOUUUUUUU!! as a seventeen-year-old, i find it INCREDIBLE that you would say something so helpful to this discussion. the truth is, all these stupid kids that think megan fox is totally hot check out her tats, then wonder what they mean, because it sounds "deep" or whatever, and when they find out about them, like this one, their reaction is "what's king lear?? who's shakespear?" dimwit, go read! i understand Scott's POV in that her getting the tat was actually paradoxical to the meaning, but at least she's doing SOMETHING better than the -ahem- OTHER "role models" of my generation. and a sad generation it is, if i may say so myself.
      anonymous anonymous 3/6/09

  • I don't understand people that judge those that get tats. If it's not something you would do, just say so but don't try to put someone else down for it. Some people get tattoos with no meaning at all, this one obviously does, to the point that most of you didn't even know what it meant or where it came from. So no she's not "trying" to be deep, she is.
    anonymous anonymous 6/10/08 Reply

    • If she had been any deeper, she would have been hit by a plane, sorry .... its fine to get a tattoo, but just don't write poetry from someone who is actually deep, especially a line which contradicts the action being taken. She would have been better off with a tattoo stating, "I am deep", now that would have been deep. Hahahaha, deep, deep, deep, deep ....

  • I do not approve or disapprove of the tattoo. She seems like a pretty cool gal and she is very pretty. I just want to correct so of the folks giving poor analysis of the shakespear quote. In the context of shakespears time the quote was a reference to King Lears two daughters that had betrayed him, he refers to their outward appearance as fancy ladies of noble birth while being of less work on the inside 'they betrayed their fathere the king' To translate it's meaning to Hollywood it means do not put too much stop in people who dress fancy and look good but are worthless on the inside. In other word It's what's on the inside that counts. That is the the modern day interpretation of the shakespear quote.

  • The tattoo is interesting. It seems to me there is a deeper psychology at work here. Is she aware of her frail status, and mocking the possibility that no one will remember her in five years? In all reality, is she not herself a "guilded butterfly"? Or is she aware that the guilded life she chose is an inprisonment of invisible bars, hence coming to terms with the fact that her individuality is now descending into an abyss?

As far as the other tattoo mentioned, "there was a little girl who didn't know love until a boy broke her heart"....it seems to me Miss Fox is externalizing some deeper pain by having this permanent mark. Not only does this express the fear she has of consciously dealing with the source of this pain, and facing her own issues regarding love, but it seems to me a little girl's plea for help. It is unfortunate that love in our society is based on affirmation of our lovability. It appears, then, that even uncommon physical beauty is not rewarded in and of itself. Maybe, just maybe, we have to love ourselves before we can be loved by others...

I would hope that a community of people expressing their opinions could be respectful of each other. There are many remarks in this blog that use abusive language towards others, just because the person happens to disagree. Not only does that creative negative energy for yourself, it also lessens the credibility of any argument you are trying to make.

Tattoos do seem to carry more negative stigma than they deserve, considering they are historically one of the oldest forms of art in existence. I personally think they are a beautiful form of self-expression...at other times they serve as a silent cry for attention, a unconscious attempt to recreate one's individuality, a bond between a family or community that can be traced back to the very roots of tribal civilization, and, at the very least, an interesting topic of conversation.

Peace, and I hope everyone has a beautiful day!

I like to think that the point behind a tattoo is to have something that means so much to a person that you are willing to wear it on you forever. And isnt this one of the most creative ways to remind yourself to stay true? It has a really strong meaning and is really a beautiful tattoo. I know a lot of people with really stupid tatoos and this one is thought provoking, and meaningful, it got all of you talking didnt it? i think its great.

(For those that dont remember, Heath Ledger screws a hooker that just walks in, turns around, drops her lower clothes and leans over table and looks incredibly bored while taking it from behind. That's what I call 'The Monster's Ball") lol

  • "Glory is fleeting," was whispered to a Roman leader repeatedly as he came back to Rome in triumph at his command so as not to get too full of himself. Forgive my 'plebe' recollection of that moment in history-for I do not recall a name or date. I thought that myself as I read her tattoo and thought, Wow, she is so pretty that she thinks she can afford to humble herself (using the context of her profession- a tattoo is humbling yourself) in such a way. It's like how I wear basketball shorts to class instead of short shorts or a skirt (I live in Texas it gets 102F and humid) to avoid advances from boys on hot days. My 'gilded' girlfriends hate my basketball shorts, that no one can wear them-but at the end of the day I can and do remove them. There is a time and a place for everything.

  • tattooing has been around for thousands of years. those who get tattoos for a reason will always enjoy them and remember why they got them.

only people who get meaningless ink to try and fit in with a perceived "fad" will ever regret what they did.

Sure ink will fade in time but with modern ink and tattooing techniques, it will take decades and when we are old and all wrinkled up, who will care if there is some colors other than our liver spots on our skin?

  • Of course gilded butterflies are to laughed at -- who would need to improve something so naturally beautiful? The Bible refers to lilies of the field in much the same way by asking in Matthew 6:29 "...yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory did not clothe himself like one of these."

----are you kidding? Shakespeare wrote for the theatre not for books, and did so for money. Shakespeare constantly ripped off Marlowe and other writers....
I'm pretty sure his quotes being plastered all over hollywood would make him proud, he wrote to entertain his Queen.

  • I just read all this. All I can think of is WOW. Although I didn't understand the multitude of meanings behind the quote either, which is probably attributed to the fact that we all see things in our own individual way. Thank you all for the laugh and insight. For the record I have four tattoos. Every single one of mine mean something to me. I have the Boondock Saint's prayer tatted on my side. It means something to me because I got it with my brother. The funny part is I know someone will comment about it. Even funnier is if you compare it to the 23rd Psalm they mean roughly the same. So what all this rambling boils down to is that, each statement, quote, or what-have-you has different meaning to different individuals. Is that not what we are, individuals? Enjoy.

  • everyone keeps referring that her tattoo means something about being fake. it doesn't. a gilded butterfly is one that cannot fly, so therefore, it's talking about how we will not envy the ones who cannot be free, when we are free ourselves.
don't get me wrong, but, Shakespeare wasn't all about "celebrities not getting put down by the press".

  • Gilded butterflies: Gilded means covered in gold or to be something it's not. What this quote is saying is in Shakespeare's King Lear, he and his beloved daughter Cordelia are being led away to prison. By now he realized that his other two daughters have lied to him to get his money. Cordelia had been loyal to him, He is talking about life in the court and how they shall spend their days listening to gossip of the court and laughing at their extravagance - like gilded butterflies. It is Lear's hope to live a simple life and come to enjoy the company of his beautiful and loving daughter Cordelia. Basically saying turn away from the fake things.

  • We two alone will sing like birds i' the cage…/ …so we'll live,/ And pray, and sing, and tell old tales, and laugh/ At gilded butterflies, and hear poor rogues/ Talk of court news; and we'll talk with them too,/ Who loses and who wins; who's in, who's out;/ And take upon 's the mystery of things,/ As if we were God's spies…" --King Lear, Act V, Scene 3

King Lear and his beloved daughter Cordelia are being led away to prison. By this time, he is blind and realizes his other two daughters Regan and Goneriel have lied to him and betrayed him for the sake of his fortune. Only Cordelia is loyal to him and only she was honest to him in the beginning - even though at the time her answer angered him. He is talking about life in the court and how they shall spend their days listening to gossip of the court and laughing at their extravagence - like gilded butterflies. It is Lear's hope to live a simple life and come to enjoy the company of his beautiful and loving daughter Cordelia.
Remember, a gilded butterfly cannot fly - it is just as much a prisoner as he is. He realizes that in the beginning, his question to his three daughters and his wealth meant nothing to him - there are no gilded butterflies that can replace a daughter's loyalty and love. It is a beautiful and simple quote.

  • actually the correct reasoning behind her tattoo is that gilded butterflies are covered in gold so they look beautiful but can never fly so cordelia nad her father are off to prison and he says this because he means that even though the butterflies are beautiful they will never be free to fly. Why make a naturally beautiful thing so fakely beautiful?

However, if Megan is truly bright, perhaps it was her way of saying, I am here, but I do not buy the b.s., and the moment I buy my own press and actually perceive myself as larger than life and better than all the little people, that's the moment the game turns on me and I become a lughing stock...it is like putting a string on your finger to remember....it makes sense.

Put on a precipice that was created by a frenzied media blitz. HMMM what a thought!!!! anonymous anonymous 6/26/09 Reply

  • If they are so personal, why the hell would you tattoo it on the OUTSIDE of your body, for everyone ELSE in the world to see, except for yourself. You completely diminish the "personal meaning" of the subject by trying to suck attention because of it, because that is why your doing it, for the "hey what does that mean?" questions, so you can act like you are the person you wish you were but don't have the balls to give things up and try to be a deep person, someone self-sacrificing, or someone who doesn't care about material things - and instead are actually morons who are absorbed by material things in life.

It is a pretentious, vain decision to get a tattoo and speaks to a persons character, intentions, and desires in life.
