Stern, who was Smith's lawyer, and her two doctors -- psychiatrist Khristine Eroschevich and Dr. Sandeep Kapoor -- entered formal not guilty pleas at an appearance in L.A. Superior Court Wednesday.
Stern's attorney, Steven Sadow, said that the charges do not apply to him because he is not a healthcare provider.

"He's not a doctor," Sadow said. "He's not signing prescriptions. That's the nature of the charge, and we're debating it."
In court, Sadow and the other defendents' attorneys agreed to hand over handwriting samples that the prosecutors asked for.
"We have nothing to hide," Stern's attorney said. "We have no problem whatsoever giving them all the handwriting they want."
Stern will return to court on June 8 to challenge the charges filed against him. If the case moves forward, the judge will set a date for a preliminary hearing, which attorneys expect to last more than two weeks.

If convicted, the three accused face more than five years in prison.
"[Howard is] doing the best he can under the circumstances," Sadow told Usmagazine.com. "We want this case moving forward. The faster we get this case into the courtroom, the faster he can get back to his life -- when a jury decides he's not guilty because he didn't do anything wrong."
