Fox News Slams Judge Sonia Sotomayor for Supreme Court?
President Obama expected announcement this morning that he has tapped federal appeals judge Sonia Sotomayor to replace retiring US Supreme Court Justice David Souter will no doubt spark a flurry of accolades from New York pols who have been calling for her promotion for weeks. The award for the first statement in response to the news, which is not yet official and won’t be until 10:15 am., is the Rev. Al Sharpton, who is at the White House (again!) for the Sotomayor announcement.
He called her selection by the president “prudent, groundbreaking and the right choice at this time in our nation’s history as we face serious constitutional and legal questions that will impact the lives of Americans for decades to come,” adding:
“For those of us who are not Latino, we should not be weighed down by the distraction of demographics or ethnicity. Instead we must rise to the challenge that President Obama has issued to put merit, judgment, and service above tribal cheerleading.”
“As one who has labored for Black, Brown and White coalitions that fight to protect the equal rights of all under our laws and Constitution, I am happy to have been present for this historic announcement of the first Latino to the Supreme Court, and know she will serve all of us with integrity and distinction.”
If confirmed by the Senate, Sotomayor, a Bronx native, will be the first Hispanic ever to hold a seat on the nation’s highest court and only the second woman on the current bench. She would join Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who also has roots in New York. (She was born and raised in Brooklyn and attended two Empire State schools: Cornell and Columbia). [NYDN]
