Cher on Chaz Bono Announcement: 'I will Strive to Be Understanding'

Cher is speaking out for the first time since news broke that her adult child Chaz Bono was in a transition from female to male.

In the new issue of People magazine on newsstands Friday, Cher, 63, shares her thoughts about the news:

"Chaz is embarking on a difficult journey, but one that I will support. I respect the courage it takes to go through this transition in the glare of public scrutiny, and although I may not understand, I will strive to be understanding."

Cher goes on to say, "The one thing that will never change is my abiding love for my child."

According to the mag, Chaz, 40, plans to have surgery, which could include a double mastectomy. He is also taking testosterone to change both his body and voice, says People.

  • I am sure this is very hard for Cher, remember her holding that adorable little girl on The Sonny & Cher Show, you could see how much she enjoyed having a little girl. She realizes she will never have grandchildrem from Chasity, not biologically anyway. There are things I think she feels she is missing now that Chasity is becoming a man. I wish them both luck.

  • Cher - it's OK to be honest. If you think this is bizarre, then by god, say so! Stop this namby-pamby political bulls--t! You were a lot more honest when "Chaz" came out as a lesbian a few years ago --- until someone got a hold of you and you became PC. Initially, you were appalled and disappointed - who can blame you? But then someone probably reminded you that not accepting this with open arms would harm your career and make the homosexual community hate you. Well, dear, you can live with that! Just be honest for once - please!
    Let's face it - Chaz has always had problems with her sexuality and her self-image. She's not exactly a raving beauty and she seems to do all she can to accentuate this. So her deciding to have a "sex change" was about as surprising as the sun rising in the east.
