Will You Be My Celebrity Dad This Father’s Day?

A: I hate Father’s Day because years ago when I came out as gay, my father disowned me. I know it’s “terrible” and my family is trying to work through it, but when your Dad’s 65 and from Cairo, Egypt there’s not a lot of queer scripture in the Qur’an I can use to illustrate why I’m not going to hell.

Instead of dwelling on something I can’t change, I’m going to focus on the people in my life who ARE father figures to me. Such as Christian Bale, Nigel Barker from Top Model, Hugh Jackman, Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Liv Schriber, Lynn’s Dad, Uncle Joe Martin, and my Uncle Scott. Not in that order, I love them all, but I really hope Daddy Brad Pitt is reading this and he’ll adopt his first gay 27 year old son.

HERE’S MY POINT: If your parents are alive and loving you, it’s a day (you probably forgot) filled with hurried phone calls home and overnighted sentimental cards in the mail. So I’m here to tell you, don’t take this Father’s Day for granted. It’s not just another day you call your parents or get Dad a new car magazine.

It’s a day that will change in your lifetime from being a chore every June 21st, to being the day you remember your parent who has passed on or who you want to call but can’t. I’m sure I’m not the only person who feels this way on Father’s Day.

Sigh.

I only have one question, ‘Daddy… where do Dad’s come from’?
