During a special hourlong episode, which Jon called "the hardest episode ever," the husband and wife of ten years who have eight children together, discussed marital difficulties they've been experiencing.
"I'm not very fond of the idea personally but I know it's necessary because my goal is peace for the kids," Kate said of the decision to separate.
Jon, who admitted that he "wasn't always the greatest communicator," said, "I'm excited and hurt at the same time because I have a new chapter in my life -- I'm only 32 years old."
Jon and Kate disclosed that they would share custody of their children, and planned to continue filming the reality series. They stressed that the children would stay in the family home, a large estate recently purchased by the Gosselins, with each parent switching off living there with the children.
"I will always love her as the mother of my kids ... we're just living our separate lives," Jon said, and both Jon and Kate stressed that they don't hate each other.

Will you still watch the TLC's hit reality TV show Jon & Kate Plus 8 even though Jon and Kate have separated?
