Dillinger's Ohio crime spree left out of new movie

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — John Dillinger's escapades in Ohio aren't part of the new movie "Public Enemies" even though his rise from small-town robber to America's most wanted man can be traced to the state.

Dillinger began a string of bank holdups in Ohio during the summer of 1933 and made a daring jail escape there a few months later.

The movie that opened last week starring Johnny Depp focuses on the gang's crime spree through the Midwest along with Dillinger's fatal shooting by FBI agents outside a Chicago theater.

Dillinger was far from a household name before three members of his gang killed a sheriff in a Lima (LEYE'-muh), Ohio jail break.

John Carnes, a curator at the Allen County Museum in Lima, says everybody knew about Dillinger after that.
