GlitteratiGossip.com: Avril Steals

Straight from GlitteratiGossip.com...Pop princess Avril Lavigne, her publishing company and co-writer Dr. Luke, are being sued for copyright infringement by Tommy Dunbar, the founder of 1970s group The Rubinoos.

Dunbar claims that Lavigne's hit, "Girlfriend," is too similar to the 1978 song, "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend," which Dunbar co-wrote with The Rubinoos' road manager.

Lavigne's manager, Terry McBride, says there's no basis for the lawsuit, "Our musicologist says there are no similarities of melody, choral progression or meter," however, he does admit that it might come down to settling the case out of court.

"You are forced to consider doing this because American lawyers can do these cases on contingency. If I defend and win, it costs me $300,000. If I go to get my costs back, the other party declares bankruptcy. You end up footing the bill."
