Penlope Cruz is Spanish directors muse

Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar has revealed that he wrote his Oscar-nominated film Volver for Penélope Cruz.

The 56-year-old released the film in 2006 with Cruz, 35, playing the lead role of Raimunda, whose mother returns to her hometown after her death to solve the problems she couldn’t fix in life.

Talking about Cruz, Almodóvar said: “Volver was the first film I wrote for her. From my perspective, it’s a film where the lens and my eyes are guided by desire towards the actress.

“Not only the way I shoot the film, but the way I do her hair, the way I dress her, the way her make-up is done.

“The character is a housewife, but very desirable. It’s something that happens rarely, but when desire guides the lens, when it’s legitimate, it really informs the character.”
