Kennedy, who is battling brain cancer, sent a letter to Massachusetts leaders asking that they change the current state law in order to allow a speedy replacement of his seat in Congress.
"It is vital for this commonwealth to have two voices speaking for the needs of its citizens and two votes in the Senate," Kennedy writes in a letter sent on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, "The Insider" confirms that the release date for the senator's memoir is September 14, a month before its original release date.
"We'd always hoped to publish in September, which is when we and all publishers typically publish our biggest books," Cary Goldstein of Hachette Book Group tells "The Insider." "Our production department moved quickly enough to make this possible."
Kennedy was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor in May of 2008, and according to the Associated Press, his aides insist that there is no material change in his condition.
