Winners in the press room at the SAG awards

The surprise winner at yesterday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards was Little Miss Sunshine, which won the ensemble award which is the SAG’s best picture. It took home a Producers Guild award earlier, which might signify that it has a better shot at Best Picture at the Oscars. I would bet that The Departed is going to win in that category, though there could be an upset.

Best Actor and Actress went to Helen Mirren for The Queen and Forest Whitaker for The Last King of Scotland. Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson won for supporting roles in Dreamgirls, awards they also received at the Golden Globes.

Chandra Wilson of Grey’s Anatomy and Hugh Laurie of House won for best actor and actress in a drama series, while America Ferrerra of Ugly Betty and Alec Baldwin of 30 ROCK were the best TV comedic actors. Chandra Wilson made a quip and Isaiah Washington in her acceptance speech, saying “It’s about those 10 cast members sitting over there and the other one in rehab. Y’all just hold me together.”

Grey’s Anatomy won best drama, and The Office was best comedy.

Hellen Mirrin and Jeremy Irons were honored for best actor and actress in a miniseries for their work in Elizabeth, giving Mirrin two SAGs for best actress yesterday.
