A producer for the television show "48 Hours" was arrested on Thursday for his alleged involvement in an attempted extortion plot against David Letterman, according to the Associated Press.

AP cites a source identifying the suspect as Robert J. Halderman. The report goes on to say Halderman has been suspended by the network. The producer has been charged with attempted grand larceny after allegedly giving the "Late Show" host an ultimatum to pay him $2 million or to risk having his affairs with female "Late Show" employees be made public, according to the AP.

On Thursday's show, Letterman said he consulted a lawyer and the Manhattan District Attorney's office to handle the matter several weeks ago. He said the opposing parties arranged multiple meetings and that he wrote the alleged extortionist a fake $2 million check.

Of his testimony before the grand jury on Thursday, Letterman said, "This morning I did something I've never done in my life and it was a combination of just unusual and scary..I had to go downtown to testify before the grand jury and I had to tell them how I...felt menaced by this and I had to tell them all of the creepy things that I have done."

  • Integrity? He showed NONE. No apology, no remorse. HE CHEATED, and it was all a big joke. To him, its not about what he did, its about the extortion. That's sorry of him.
