The CBS network is speaking out on the arrest of Robert J. Halderman for allegedly trying to blackmail David Letterman for $2 million.

Halderman, a producer for the television show "48 Hours," was arrested Thursday.

"CBS was made aware of an ongoing police investigation involving David Letterman and an employee at '48 Hours' who was subsequently arrested yesterday on charges of attempted grand larceny in the first degree," a rep for the network tells ET. "CBS is cooperating fully with the authorities and the employee has been suspended pending the results of the investigation. Mr. Letterman addressed the issue during the show’s broadcast last night, and we believe his comments speak for themselves."

Friday night's "Late Show" was pre-taped before the alleged extortion attempt was made public.

The producer has been charged with attempted grand larceny after allegedly giving the "Late Show" host an ultimatum to pay him $2 million or to risk having his affairs with female "Late Show" employees be made public, according to the Associated Press.
