“Cute and smart is better than cute and dumb” - Danica McKellar
You probably only know Danica McKellar as Winnie on “The Wonder Years”, but she’s branching out these days. The actress, now 32, has written a book called “Math Doesn’t Suck” to encourage girls to get into math. Danica graduated summa cum laude from UCLA with a BS in mathematics in June 1998.
She told the weeks issue of Newsweek,
“When girls see the antics of Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan, they think that being fun and glamorous also means being dumb and irresponsible, but I want to show them that being smart is cool,” she said. “Being good at math is cool. And not only that, it can help them get what they want out of life.”
The book will also include 3 biographies of beautiful mathematicians.
Now this is what I’m talking about - positive role models for girls. However, I’m pretty sure no one under the age of 20 knows what “The Wonder Years” is, nor have they ever heard of Danica McKellar. So, unfortunately I’m not sure little girls today will care.
