Katherine Heigl Discharged from 'Grey's Anatomy'

In the final few minutes of Thursday night's episode of "Grey's Anatomy," Dr. Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl) was fired from the staff of Seattle Grace Hospital.

Dr. Richard Webber (James Pickens, Jr.) took this drastic measure following Izzie making a potentially fatal medical error with a kidney patient. Izzie survived cancer, but could not survive the hospital's budget cuts.

Izzie also left husband Dr. Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) via a note she placed in his locker. He solemnly shared the news with his bewildered colleagues Dr. Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) and Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo).

There has been much speculation since last season whether or not she would remain scrubbed in. The actress also has a burgeoning film career and recently adopted a daughter. A rep for ABC tells "The Insider" that Katherine has not left the show for good. Watch "Grey's Anatomy" on Thursday nights on ABC to see when Izzie checks back in.

  • Wow a new doctor on Grey's...and here's the shocker...she has blond hair. I think Shonda has a thing for blonds. What a relief she didn't also turn out to be gay like the last three blond doctors that were added to the show.

  • I can't believe that Izzie has to leave like this and ruin her relationship with Alex. I don't like how the show is turning out to be. It is not worth watching anymore without Izzie and George. I tend to think that if she had died from cancer it...

  • Katherine Heigl is coming back in November for sweeps. She is off right now filming a movie with Josh Duhumel and taking care of her recently adopted child. She will be back.

  • It sucks that Gorge was let go but they can't let Izzy! I would rather have Yang leave she's always bitchy. It just wouldn't be the show without Katherine Heigl. I agree with the lesbian stuff why do they have to keep dragging it on?

  • I am really tired of the lesbian story line. The audience for this show is women. How many lesbian doctors are there. Apparently every new female on the show is a lesbian and is interested in Callie who should be with Mark.

  • I thought the same thing myself. I say next year during sweeps George just comes walking in the hospital and flips everyone out. It could be that one of his brothers was the one that died and instead of saying he was 007, he was asking for George....
