The Associated Press reports that Dr. Nathalie Maullin testified Tuesday that Smith fit the definition, but that the words "addict" or "addiction" were never used in discussing Smith's problems with her, her former boyfriend Howard K. Stern and her former doctor Sandeep Kapoor.
Maullin treated Smith for an apparent withdrawal from pain and anti-anxiety medication, the AP reports. She also testified that Smith had legitimate issues with pain.
"I never thought she was trying to get high. I think she wanted to tune out," Maullin testified, according to the AP.
According to the AP, the charging documents in Smith's drug trial claims that Kapoor, Stern, and Dr. Khristine Eroshevich "acted with knowledge that Anna Nicole Smith was an addict."
All three have pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiring to provide a controlled substance to Smith, who passed away in February 2007.

Should the family of "Balloon Boy" dad Richard Heene testify against him?
