According to the Associated Press, the United States has officially requested that Roman Polanski be extradited back to the U.S. The director is currently being held in prison by the Swiss government in Zurich.

Polanski was arrested in Zurich on September 26 for having sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977. After pleading guilty, he fled the U.S. in 1978.

The Justice Ministry says the U.S. put in this request on Thursday. The paperwork has been forwarded to the proper authorities for a hearing on the matter, according to the AP.

If the extradition request is granted, Polanski may make an appeal, according to a statement the AP references.
