Asked why she thinks the public is fascinated with her family, Kate says: “Well, I think certain events take place that makes us sitting ducks. That makes us easy targets. Certain ones of us speak a lot; others of us prefer to keep our mouths shut.”
"So you think that doesn't help if someone is talking about it?" Ellen asks.
“I just know that on TV or off TV," Kate says, "and I've been very much targeted, torn apart."
Ellen later wonders if the spotlight that the family receives makes Kate worried about the prospect of getting involved in a new relationship.
“I am. I'm not thinking about it, but the thought has crossed my mind [that] at some point it's going to be scrutinized,” Kate says.
The TV mom also talks about explaining to her kids why she'd remove her wedding ring.
“I was wearing it. At some point, I talked to the kids -- it came up very naturally -- and I said, ‘I'm not going to be wearing this ring very much longer.’ [They said,] ‘Oh, why?’ I said, ‘Because I'm not going to be married to Daddy anymore,’ which of course hearing that I don't think was fun for them," Kate says.
