Glenn Close Enjoys Swapping the Big Screen for the Small One on "Damages"

On her FX series, "Damages," Glenn Close enjoys playing the character of legal eagle, Patty Hewes, whose success as a high-stakes litigator in New York City has suffered little from her apparent lack of scruples. In fact, it could probably be argued that it was her character's moral flexibility that allowed her to climb to the top of her game. Surprisingly, though, Glenn was warned about taking the risk of flexing her acting muscles by starring in a TV series, as opposed to sticking to the big screen.

"I have always been seduced by really good writing. Very early on in my career, I made the decision to go where the writing was at a time when I was told, after doing The World According to Garp, if I did anything on television, it might really affect my career in film. It just didn't make sense to me. I kept thinking, 'Well, if the English can do it, why can't we do it?' So that's basically how I have made my choices, what I read on the page."
I like Glenn's show and also how she thinks. I, too, judge how I should comport myself based on whether or not the English are able to do something successfully. Unfortunately, I've learned that they're not all that understanding about the driving on the left side of the road thing over here. Sigh. Unenlightened bastards. Try thinking outside the box for once!
