"The Insider" has the latest...

Talk show host Regis Philbin underwent hip surgery this morning and ET has the latest on his condition.

"Everything went perfectly this morning during Regis' hip replacement surgery, and his doctor said that Regis couldn't be in better shape," his rep tells "The Insider."  "Regis anticipates returning to 'LIVE! with Regis and Kelly' soon after the first of the year, given the procedure's typical four-six week recovery time. Regis and Joy want to thank everyone for their support and best wishes."

  • Hi Regis:
Saw you this morning, can't believe it! Did you have a complete or partial replacement. My husband (55) had his replaced on 11/30 and still can't lay comfortably in bed. What's your secret? Good luck with your recovery!

  • Hi Regis, I am gald to see you back and doing so well, my grandmother is a big fan of yours and may need to have hip surgery herself. She is very nervous to go through this again, she had surgery about 18 yrs ago and the rod in her leg broke. We are trying to find a good surgeon. We went for one opinion and we are going for a second, can you tell me the name of the docotr you used? It would mean alot to her, glad to see you back, you and Kelly make a great team. We came to see you last December and enjoyes your show. Happy New Years to you nad your family. Debbie from Long Island

  • Dear Regis,
When I saw you this morning I just couldn’t believe how great you look. I was amazed that you can walk without any help. I had the total hip replacement in HSS on November 30, just one day before you. I’m doing OK however I can’t walk without the cane and I can’t seat for more than 15 minutes. I exercise three times a day for about 45 minutes each time.
You are doing so well… what is your secret? What is the doctor’s name? Is he associated with HSS?
I would like to get back to work and to the normal life very soon. Please let me know what to do to speed up my recovery. Thank you very much and I wish you all the best.

Hope you are doing well. Your replacement co-host are ok but not the same. Looking forward to your return. I have been a watcher of the show for many years so get well and come back soon. I am sure Joy wants it too. HaHa.

  • Hi Regis! I had a hip replacement in 2003, at age 41 due to an old motorcycle injury and continued trouble. Yes, there was some pain, but I was up and walking within a day-or-so. I couldn't manage crutches, so I used a cane. Physical therapy is a Godsend. Follow your therapist's instructions to the letter. You'll make fast improvement. Cold weather makes me a little creaky, but overall, I'm well and strong!

  • Regis,

Wow! I just saw you this morning on your show. Walking with no problem, crossing your legs while sitting on the high chair. I'm amazed. I had my right hip replaced on the same day you had your surgery. I'm still not able to walk normal with out use of crutches, I'm not able to bend past 90 degrees. I can't even imagine crossing my legs with out major pain or fear of displacing the hip. What kind of hip replacement did you have? I'm 44 and this was my third hip replacement.

    • Hello. I had a hip replacement on Oct 6th of last year. I was told 3 months back to work on Jan 4th. But med Dec my P/T had me do 2 new exercises. Some leg extensions and leg presses. I didnt realize that those exercises cause my knee to hurt. So I had to take another month off cause to be totally honest I couldnt do my job. I am a flight attendant. On Xmas day I put 2 and 2 together and decided not to do those exercise for now. So I stop. And pain went away. No it seems to come back every once in a while. I am going back to work in Feb and I pray to God that I can do my job. I still walk funny with a limp. I hope this goes away. No cane though. and I am 45 so I know what you are talking about... I just started to put my sock on with no problem..

  • Hi Regis,

I wish you well. Soon you will be dancing and kicking the football.
I am 66 and had a total hip replacement over three years ago but is was done with the anterior approach which is less invasive. I was able to put full weight on the hip the next day and used a walker for no more than thirty minutes total. I could do stairs by the afternoon. I was released from the hospital after 48 hours and sent home with a cane and some exercises which I did three times a day.
There was no stay at the hospital for rehab. I used the pain medication for five days and stayed way ahead of any post-op pain. The surgery lasted for only one hour and was done through a four inch incision. I wish I could have advised you of this before your surgery but did not know about it until after it was over. I state this all now for those who are reading these comments who may be considering hip replacement. There is an option to the posterior approach and a lot of info on the web about the anterior approach. I strongly recommend it. I was back to driving and back to work in two weeks and gave the cane up at two and a half weeks ( I really did not need it much at all).

God speed and do those exercises.

  • Hi Regis
I just turned 56 this week and had a hip replacement on Nov. 9 2009. I had a few minor complications but everything is going well now. I am walking with a cane now and I am not using the walker. I know that it sounds silly but that felt great. I started riding the excercise bike this week for a few minutes at a time. My husband tells me that you and Guy Adami are becoming quite the day traders. I hope to get back to work sometime in the middle of January. Just make sure that you do your excercises 2 to 3 times a day. We have to gain our strength back but we don't want to over do it and cause a set back.

All the best to you and your family. And have a Merry Christmas

  • Regis: I had total hip replacement in Seattle 9 weeks ago and it's still a challenge to ambulate with a normal gait but it's getting there. It wasn't at all what I expected but I am hopeful it was worth doing. I hope you are soon able to get back to your normal life with your show. Cindy, RN

  • Hope your doing well, I was just wondering how much pain you were in and if this surgery fixed the problem. I haven't been able to walk for over 2years, they did back surgery on me and that didn't do anything but make me be in more pain, I now am waiting for hip replacement surgery, which really scares me, since they almost killed me 3times with the back surgery, but what choice do I have except to go ahead with the hip replacement as I want my life back without pain and be able to walk. Hope everything went well for you
