The special effects-laden film made $73 million, according to preliminary studio estimates. In the movie, Sam Worthington plays an ex-Marine in a wheelchair given an opportunity to get his legs back again. Tasked to get involved in the hostilities between earth and the beautiful alien world of Pandora, he agrees to put his mind in the body of an alien "avatar" -- and finds himself falling in love with a beautiful native (Zoe Saldana) and torn between both worlds in a desperate fight for his own survival and that of the indigenous people.
Disney's 'The Princess and the Frog' took second with $12.2 million. The animated film centers on a girl named Tiana who encounters a frog prince and must help him become human again.
Coming in third was Sandra Bullock's 'The Blind Side,' with $10 million, while 'Did You Hear About the Morgans' premiered in fourth with $7 million. Taking fifth was the blockbuster, 'The Twilight Saga: New Moon' with $4.4 million.
