"SNL" executive producer Lorne Michaels says he "always wanted" the 88-year-old actress to host the show and "The Insider" confirms on May 8, she'll do just that. "Years ago, I turned it down three times," Betty tells USA Today. "It's so New York, and I'm not New York at all. ... But my agent said he'd divorce me if I didn't do it, and I love my agent."
Lorne says it was the fans that really sold him on the idea of commissioning Betty to do the show. "It took on a groundswell," Lorne admits. "It isn't something we would have said no to, ... [but the campaign] validated that, 'Oh, that'd be fun.' ... It was the outpouring of affection from fans, and we feel the same way."
Betty says she's ready to host "SNL" and isn't the least bit worried about the hard work, telling the newspaper, "I've got so much energy, it's ridiculous. I love working. My schedule is a feverish one, and I'm used to that."
