Did Whoopi Make a Big Whoops on The View?

Today was Whoopi Goldberg's first day moderating The View and was only into the show 15 minutes when she brought up Michael Vick's dogfighting conviction charges. She reportedly said:

"You know from his background this is not an unusual thing for where he comes from. There are certain things that are indicative to certain parts of our country."

A shocked Joy Behar asked:

"How about dog torture and dog murdering?"

Whoopi answered:

"Unfortunately it's part of the thing. You're a dog lover. For a lot of people dogs are sport."

Behar looked like she was shaking her head in disgust. Goldberg explained that it took a while for Vick to realize that the charges against him were serious.

"It seemed like a light went off in his head when he realized that this was something the entire country really didn't appreciate, didn't like."

Whoopi added if the case had involved somebody from New York City her feelings would have been different and that Vick was raised in the South. She claimed:

"This is part of his cultural upbringing."

Whoopi apparently continued to defend Vick:

"This is a kid who comes from a culture when this is not questioned."

OMG, I can't believe she started out her job by defending Vick! I had a lot of respect for her too. Whether or not dog fighting was common practice in the South before or even now does not make it right! Racial hate crimes were common practice in the South too before and people made changes because these acts were evil. C'mon Whoopi, think about what you're saying! Animal abuse is not acceptable to me and I lived in the South growing up too.
