Ben Affleck Details Life with J.Lo, Working with Bro Casey & More

I've been a Ben Affleck fan since I was a senior in college. I was a history major and had to write my senior thesis on the Irish of South Boston, so -- the days after Ben and Matt Damon won Oscars for Good Will Hunting -- I found myself in South Boston, where the movie was also filmed and the city was celebrating. Even a celeb freak back then, I was more interested in Ben and Matt than the Irish, so my sis and I ran around town taking photos for "my paper." Some how it worked -- my teacher didn't mind seeing photos of the L Street Tavern (one of the exteriors in the movie) in my history paper and I graduated.

Mr. Jennifer Garner is making his directorial debut and talks about it to Details. Here are some highlights:

  • On Jennifer Lopez: “It was probably bad for my career. What happens in this sort of bleed-over from the tabloids across your movie work. You go to a movie, you only go once. But the tabloids and Internet are everywhere. You can really subsume the public image of somebody. I ended up in an unfortunate crosshair position where I was in a relationship and [the media] mostly lied and inflated a bunch of salacious stuff for the sake of selling magazines. And I paid a certain price for that. Then, in concert with some movies that didn’t work…”
  • On his career: “I feel like (Gone Baby Gone) is the linchpin for my life. My career. I have a lot riding on it. I want [the film] to work. Badly. I mean, a sh--ty movie comes out on 2,800 screens? I’ve been there and it’s embarrassing.”
  • On casting his brother Casey: “He was the obvious choice by far. I think he’s a really good actor, but he also had the benefit of people not being as aware of him. Other actors, you have this expectation of what they’ll do. But Casey? He could surprise you.”
