Prince William of Wales joins Royal Air Force

Prince William of Wales, 25, is set to follow in the footsteps of his father, Charles, Prince of Wales, 58, by joining the Royal Air Force. The prince plans to undertake a short attachment of four months, starting in January next year. Following that, he will do a stint in the Royal Navy. According to the statement of Buckingham Palace, everything is done to,

familiarize [prince William with] the structures, capabilities and ethos of the RAF and the Royal Navy. [There he] will spend time gaining an understanding of the fullest spectrum of the Royal Navy’s capabilities – from submarines to the ships of the surface fleet, as well as the Fleet Air Arm.

When William becomes the King, he will be the head of all the armed forces in the UK. Prince Charles earned his wings in 1971 after training as a jet pilot in the RAF. He also went on to command the Royal Navy minesweeper HMS Bronington.
