Chloe Sevigny: Genius or Trainwreck?

We never really know what to make of Chloe Sevigny.   She's been in all kinds of movies - from tiny art-house films that no one has ever heard of ("Trees Lounge") to the critically acclaimed ("Boys Don't Cry" - which won her an Oscar).  And she's currently making it big on the small screen as Nicollette Grant in HBO's "Big Love."

In other words, she's all over the place.

And really, the same can be said of her fashion sense.  Let's face it, it takes real guts to go out in public wearing some of the outfits she does.   Shirts that look at you?   My grandma's housedress?    This dress (not to mention the chicks in the background)?

Sometimes the individual pieces aren't the issue, but the combinations she concocts.  Half a wedding dress and riding pants?   Or this lovely number, which looks like a set of curtains I once bought from Pier  1 - which would actually be kind of a cool fashion statement if it weren't for her unfortunate choice of accompanying jacket.

There's just always something a little... off about her ensembles.  And it's impossible to tell whether it's a deliberate attempt to maintain her indie image, or whether she's just careless... or tasteless?

So when she introduced her own clothing line last month, no one was more surprised than us.    We were not surprised, however, at some of her designs.  Whether you want to look like a modern day Trashy Sandra Dee or a 1980s mod-punk, or the crazy cat lady who lives down the street - there's a little something for everyone.... everyone with a slightly off-kilter sense of fashion, that is.

What do you think - is Chloe Sevigny a fashion genius or a fashion trainwreck?

  • I think Chloe tries to set fashion trends rather than being a slave to what designers tell her to do. She likes to have fun with fashion, and must be happy to get a change from her Big Love waredrobe.
