Halle Berry has revealed that her father used to beat up her sister and mother.

The Oscar-winning actress admits that she had felt guilty for not being able to stop dad Jerome from being abusive.

Berry's father, who died in 2003, divorced her mother when she was four years old, but he moved back in with the family when she was 10 because her mother thought it would be best for the children.

"The hard part for me was he never abused me," adding: "I was dealing with a lot of guilt because I saw my sister go through terrible beatings. I felt helpless and like a coward because I didn't do anything and couldn't do anything.

"I spent many of the early years of my life trying to make sense of all that and recover and find my self-esteem."
