Jessica Simpson’s doing time at The View; Mariah Carey, Jennifer Connelly and Jennifer Garner help Glamour Magazine celebrate women in the Big Apple; Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes take Manhattan; Michelle Pfeiffer eyes the London stage while Kylie Minogue fills it with a lavish spectacle; Celine Dion, Patti Labelle and Rihanna wow Monte Carlo and Paris Hilton readies to announce an unusual sobriety campaign in India. It’s always real and it’s always glamorous. That’s why we call it… the glamorous life.
New York / Jessica Simpson, Mariah Carey, Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes, Heidi Klum, Seal, Brooke Shields, Nancy Pelosi, Lance Bass, Owen Wilson, Isaac Mizrahi, Jennifer Garner
‘Tis quite the week to be in New York. Everybody and everything seems to be happening in the Big Apple these days.
First up…The blonde replaces the blonde! Jessica Simpson will be in New York to co-host two episodes of The View on November 15 and 16 now that Elisabitch Hasselbeck is on maternity leave (which one can only pray becomes a permanent state of affairs, God willing). Be sure to tune in… Jessica is likely to deliver a fair number of gems during her two appearances. (I can almost see Whoopi Goldberg rolling her eyes now!)
For the record, what exactly does Jessica Simpson do these days besides be Jessica Simpson? I’ve been pondering that in my free time lately and I still haven’t quite figured out an answer… hmmm. I’ll come back to that…
An A-list roster of celebs turned out to lend a hand to Glamour Magazine's Women of the Year honors last week. Diane Sawyer presented the Style Force Award to Donna Karan; Jennifer Connelly presented The Life Saver Award to pharmaceutical specialist, Dr. Victoria Hale; Steven Colbert introduced Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, who received the Special Recognition Award; Elizabeth Edwards received The Role Model award from her children Cate, Emma Claire and Jack; Princeton and Harvard grads Brooke Shields and Rashida Jones gave The Heads of Class award to four current female presidents of Ivy league institutions; Fran Lebowitz presented The Voice of Our Time Lifetime Achievement Award to Pulitzer and Nobel Prize winning author, Toni Morrison; and Jennifer Garner was presented with The Icon Next Door award. The soundtrack to the evening was provide by none other than Mariah Carey, who sang… you guessed it… “Hero”, with a little assistance from the African Children’s Choir.
Whew… Don't tell me that sisters ain't doin it for themselves! I’m dizzy from just writing about so heady an affair. What must it have been like to be there? I can’t speak to that as I’m sure I was enjoying a date with a bottle of wine and my good friend Tivo, but I can tell you that the place to be post the Glamour awards was NYC hotspot, Butter, which was celebrating its fifth anniversary with a mega bash!
At the party, DJ AM manned the DJ booth after Seal performed a live set for the top drawer crowd, which included John Legend, Ms. Seal (Heidi Klum), Owen Wilson, Gavin DeGraw, Kevin Connolly, Mandy Moore Val Kilmer, Lance Bass, and Robert Verdi. Jamie-Lynn Sigler and Taye Diggs, both of whom presented at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards, even hotfooted it over to the party once their work was done. Hot…hot…hot!
Fresh from Berlin, look for TomKat to continue their whirlwhind tour with an extended stop in NYC where Tom is on tap to be honored by the Museum of Moving Image at a gala dinner slated to be held at Cipriani 42nd Street on Tuesday. Expect Project Runway’s Nina Garcia and Ralph Lauren’s offspring Dylan Lauren to add a little fashionista glitter to the soiree as both are on the “salute committee” for the event. Sounds tres chic, no?
Also next month from December 15 -17, look for designer Isaac Mizrahi to narrate the classic Peter and the Wolf at the Peter B. Lewis Theatre at the Guggenheim Museum. Couture, discount fashion, housewares, television and now theatre… is there anything Isaac Mizrahi can’t do?
London / Michelle Pfeiffer, Kylie Minogue
Fresh off a hot comeback trail that has included turns in the films Hairspray, opposite John Travolta, and Stardust, co-starring Robert DeNiro, it seems Michelle Pfeiffer is ready to take on even more new challenges. The buzz is that the 49-year-old still blonde, still bombshell gorgeous actress has expressed interest in trying her hand at live theatre in London’s West End and is in negotiations to debut a project in 2008.
According to The London Paper, an insider has been quoted as saying that “Pfeiffer has been in talks with producers at the Nimax Theatres consortium, with a view to doing a stage play in London next year. She feels it would be a great way of reminding people that she is a serious actress.” Well whatever the reason, all I can say is, “Bravo Miss Pfeiffer!”
Meanwhile, already hitting the stage in London is Kylie Minogue’s new spectacular, which is simply being called The Kylie Show. In spite of rumors about her health, Australia’s reigning pop queen performed with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra last week in a ‘lavish and spectacular” show that was recorded for and broadcast on the UK’s ITV. Atta girl! Welcome back Kylie… you’ve been missed dollface.
Monte Carlo / Prince Albert, Celine Dion, Patti Labelle, Mika, Rihanna, Julian McMahon
Monaco was awash with more than royalty and moneyed residents last weekend, as some of music’s biggest names popped into town for the annual World Music Awards, lorded over by Prince Albert.
Television hunk Julian McMahon hosted the star-studded event where Canadian songbird Celine Dion received the prestigious Legend Award, rightfully joining the ranks of artists like Luciano Pavarotti and Elton John; Queen of Rock n’ Soul Patti Labelle, also picked up a Legend Award for her contribution to R & B; sexy and ambiguous Brit pop star Mika scored four awards including Male Entertainer of the Year; and a radiant, 'wouldn't you be if you were dating Josh Hartnett' Rihanna picked up an award for Female Entertainer of the year. Swell…swell…swell…talk about rockin’ royal.
Miami / Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony
With hubby Marc Anthony at her side, a more voluptuous than usual Jennifer Lopez performed in Miami last week in support of her underperforming new album, Brave. Perhaps it is precisely because her music isn’t generating much interest these days (her new album has slipped to #80 on the Billboard 200 after only four weeks in release) that the diva decided it was time to finally announce that she was expecting a child. Well quelle surprise! How on earth would anyone have guessed? And here I was thinking that Jen had just been enjoying a little too much Ropa Vieja…Hmmm…
India / Paris Hilton
Finally, in what is probably the wackiest story of the week, Paris Hilton, the heiress known for her heart and generosity, has reportedly found a new cause that will soon take her to India – and it involves elephants.
Always outspoken and on the cutting edge of the most pressing problems of our time, Hilton has expressed deep concern about a herd of elephants in India who have been going on deadly drunken rampages after dipping into the rice beer stashes brewed by the locals in a region of northeast India. So concerned is princess Paris that she is said to be not only scheduling a trip to India to help rescue the alcoholic elephants, but also launching a campaign to get locals to hide their rice beer from the elephants.
“It’s becoming really dangerous. We need to stop making alcohol available to them”, Hilton said according to an SAWF News report.
My question is this…where was Paris when her gal pal LiLo was boozing it up? Seems to me Lindsay could have used at least a bit of support if not a whole campaign not so very long ago. I mean…I’m just sayin’.
Ah well…I guess we won’t figure out the answer to that one today. So I guess that’s a nother glam wrap to another glam week. Until next time…Cheers!
