The Hollywood Offender: Cruise's Box Office Bomb

To the surprise of no one save himself, his mother, and the 5,000 Scientologists who plucked down their ten bucks to watch their Prince play a Senator, "Lions For Lambs," already sporting terrible reviews, was a big, fat bomb at the box office its opening weekend, coming in fourth with only $6.7 million. It was beaten by "Bee Movie," "American Gangster" and "Fred Claus." Dude, when a bloated Vince Vaughn playing Santa's brother beats you? It may be time to re-access.

The suits at MGM, who distributed the film for Tommy Boy's newly formed United Artists, are trying to put a shiny, happy spin on things, claiming that it was made for a "older audience" and they don't go to see movies opening weekend. Presumably because they're old and it takes them a full week to even get to the car and find the movie theater and all that. Uh-huh

Of course, to be fair (my specialty), movies with a war/government theme haven't exactly been lighting up the box office in the past few months, so it's far too soon to hold the funeral for Maverick's career. However, this picture was the first to come out of UA, and getting both shitty reviews and no audience isn't exactly what his investors were looking for, I'm sure. Which means Tommy's probably in a foul mood right about now.

  • i might be more inclined to go see this movie if I knew he would be wearing either a) a flighter pilot jumpsuit or b) tighty whities and a dress shirt.

  • Tom Cruise will always be the man to me. He really proved himself in Top Gun.
