According to Reuters, police investigators probing allegations that someone put pepper spray on Rivera’s clothing and makeup said Saturday they are looking into whether anyone lied to them after forensic tests found no trace of the substance.
Rivera and pageant organizers claimed that someone had laced her makeup and doused her clothing with a chemical they believed to be pepper spray during the pageant.
In post-pageant interviews, Rivera, 24, has said she broke out in hives and swelling during the competition and iced down her face and body backstage.
A pageant spokesman told the Associated Press, “We thought at first it was an allergic reaction, or maybe nerves. But the second time, we knew it couldn’t have been a coincidence.”
Last Sunday, Rivera said in a press conference: “At one point I said, `Am I a masochist?’ But I said, `I am with God and this is my goal, regardless of the results.’
The alleged pepper spray incident came after Rivera reportedly was robbed of her gowns, makeup and credit cards, and the pageant itself was delayed due to bomb threats.
But Puerto Rico’s Forensic Sciences Institute reportedly tested her belongings on Friday and found they contained no traces of capsicum, pepper spray’s active ingredient. They did not test for other chemicals.
“I guess she has a lot of explaining to do,” police spokesman Stephen Alvarez said on Saturday.
