Spice up your life indeed. The return of the Spice Girls looks to be the biggest reunion of many this year. A combination Fashion Television runway segment, night out at the disco and very kickin’ street party in San Francisco’s Castro district, last night’s show was all about production.
The show was a masterpiece of pacing, beginning with an opening video imagining five baby girls, curiously looking a lot like the Spice Girls, growing up to be a great big band and bestest of friends, to the closing group hug, because you know we have to do this.
It started with “Spice Up Your Life,” followed by “Stop” - as good a Diana Ross and the Supremes song as ever came out of Motown - and then “Say You’ll Be Mine.” A triple mega-hit salvo that made up for the weaker fourth song, the new “Headlines (Friendship Never Ends).”
