For all his eccentricities as an actor, Johnny Depp is first and foremost, a dad. And a grateful one at that. In March last year, Johnny Depp’s 8-year old daughter Lily-Rose contracted kidney failure as a result of E. coli poisoning. She contracted the bug while the family was staying at a rented mansion during filming of Sweeney Todd. Her condition worsened so much that it was feared she wouldn’t live. “It was the most frightening thing we have ever been through. It was hell,” recalls Depp. “But the magic is that she pulled through beautifully. Great Ormond Street was terrific, a great hospital.” And so out of gratefulness, Golden Globes 2008 winner Johnny Depp donated $2 million out of his money to Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. But the giving didn’t stop there. Last week, Depp treated the staff to the party for the London premiere of his film Sweeney Todd. And last November, he spent four hours at the hospital telling bedtime stories to patients dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow (in full costume!).
