Daniel Smith Wanted to "Break Free"
Family friend to the Smith's, Ford Shelley, has issued a statement saying that while Daniel Smith cared deeply for his mother, he wanted to be separated from the image she (Anna Nicole Smith) carried with her.  Quoted in the Associated Press, Shelley says, "He loved his mother but didn't want to be known as her son.  He wanted to break free."

Even though it was determined that a drug tail took the life of Daniel last year, Ford says Daniel rarely did drugs and "couldn't even hold his liquor."  He was unlike his mother in that respect.  Anna Nicole was known for keeping a stash of prescription drugs.  She had quite a bit of methadone, which was a contributor in Daniel's death.

If he wasn't a druggie, it's no wonder he wanted to be apart from her.
