Oscar starting clips were a mixed bag

The general consensus on the opening montage of the Oscars, which producer Gil Cates has called “arguably the most exciting piece of film that has ever opened an Oscar show,” is that it was ok, but to quote Jaybird, was more like a “Universal Studios theme park ride.” It wasn’t entertaining so much as a fun quick ride that wasn’t really memorable.

It started out as a scene from Cloverfield and the camera panned down the city street to show actors and scenes from films of note, superimposed onto the background and looking ghostly.

It was fast and entertaining, but it crammed so many scenes and movies in that a single one didn’t stand out. It was probably a lot more exciting for the people who worked so hard to create it.

The film that followed the Best Costume Design award was a clip of the history of the Oscars, and it was touching and well done. It was chock full of Oscar feel-good goodness like Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s acceptance speech and the guy that streaked in the 70s.
