ROBERT Duvall will be kidded forever about his gonzo portrayal of bloodthirsty Lt. Col. Bill Kilgore in “Apocalypse Now.”As he waited for a table at Joan’s on Third in LA the other day, he said to another customer, “When you’re hungry, there’s nothing like it, huh? I love the smell of good food.” The man, a film buff, quickly riffed a famous Duvall line, replying, “Isn’t it the smell of napalm you love?” To which Duvall shot back: “That’s only in the morning. It’s 1 o’clock. Time for lunch.”
