Patrick says they're lucky enough to have the boys on a matching schedule. He says,
Here's the cycle: They wake up, they cry, they go to the breast, they eat, they poo or pee, you change a diaper and they go back to sleep. It's much harder for my wife than for me because she's pumping or nursing.
Still, Patrick says the newborn phase isn't his specialty. We previously posted on his head-wobbling baby handling, but in addition he says,
Certainly the first four or five months, the husband is really kind of a houseboy. I've talked to a lot of guys and I think it's a hard transition, because you lose your wife for awhile. She's putting all her energy into your children. When the babies get a little older, I do much better.
His wife Jillian said much of the same thing a few months ago, when Patrick posed with her pregnancy belly on the cover of Life magazine. She said,
He’s very hands-on. He’s the first to admit he prefers the more interactive stage of children versus newborns. The newborn phase is difficult for fathers—they don’t feel the connection because babies are all about breast-feeding.

Do you agree with Patrick and Jillian? Are the first few months more of a mom and baby time, especially if mom is nursing?
