Jim joined the merchant marine at 16. He worked hard, and was well liked by his shipmates. There was only one problem; Jim suffered from chronic sea sickness. he had to leave the MM at 17. After a stint at male modeling (he made good money), and some attempts at semi pro sports, James joined the National Guard, and wound up in Korea. He won 2 Purple Hearts.
JG then found his way into acting. A notable early experience was a non speaking role in the Caine Court marshal on Broadway. There he got to work with legend, iconic actor Henry Fonda.
Garner was to find his greatest success on V. He played Brett Maverick in the 60's, in what became one of TV's favorite characters. Garner was to reprise the role, in a way, in the 70's, by portraying another of America's most beloved TV characters, cynical & sardonic PI James Rockford. Garner would retire from the Rockford Files, despite high ratings, due to the tole the show took on his health.
Now here's where the native American connection comes in. Jim's birth mother, who died while he was still young, was part Cherokee. In fact Jim's production company was named Cherokee, perhaps in honor of her.
When I say that people love James Garner, I mean that they really love the big guy; his rugged good looks, his sarcastic tongue in check humour, and especially the flawed humanity he brought to his most notable roles. They don't make then like that anymore, except perhaps in Oklahoma.
Good Golly Miss Molly! While James Garner is one of my all time favorite TV performers, when it comes to tall, ruggedly good looking actors of native American descent, some one else pops to mind. That would be the stunning actress/model Molly Culver. molly is best known for playing the office bone crusher Tasha Dexter in the Pamela Anderson series VIP (was Pam in that? I only really remember molly!) A woman of amazon proportions, 6 ft Molly towered over both her female and male co stars. Ms Culver is a hard gal to miss, and Pamela Anderson, the show's producer as well as star, deserves full credit for hiring such a potentially dangerous rival. In fact Pam and Molly did many scenes together. Pam was still in her prime then, and as sexy as she was, when standing along side her imposing partner in crime, your eyes inevitably drifted to wards Molly.
LA MUJER MARAVILLA - Molly!Of course VIP isn't the only work Molly has done. You'll remember her from some shampoo commercials in the 90's. Culver has been a commentator on VH1's I Love the '70s, I Love the '70s Volume II, I Love the '80s, I Love the '80s Strikes Back (they missed a golden opportunity for an 70's versus 80's themed show. That's a grudge match just begging to happen!), I Love the '90s, I Love the '90s: Part Deux and I Love Toys, as well as the host of Dirt Rider Adventures on OLN. Molly is also rumored to be featured in a project called Warrior Angels (I'd have called it Valkyries, but as usual no one asked me), and co staring veteran B movie mainstay, and genuinely talented actor - Dutchman Rutger Hauer. Rutger briefly headed to wards the A List when he was featured as the rogue replicant in Harrison Ford's Blade Runner, but slide down wards after. he costarred in the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie with Kristy Swanson - later married to much older Alan Thicke, recently arrested for DUI, and a separate cause of assault, and soon hoping to portray Anna Nicole Smith in a TV movie (now that movie had to happen, especially with so many sharks still looking to cash in, and feed of the corpse). Now that's "6 Degree's of Cheese", and practically makes Hauer the male Karen Black. The poor man has even stooped to doing a few episodes of LEXX - the noir sci fi series that manages to look like it was taped in a sewer, and featuring Germany's answer to Karen Black - Xenia "Grossen Lipens" Seeberg.
However I digress. back to the much more interesting subject of Molly Culver. As I say, she's currently involved in the Warriors Angels project. There's another role that she might be perfect for. The role of Wonder Woman was recent given to Amazing Australian Megan Gale. One look at her and I thought "finally Hollywood got something right!" However like the anticipated Wonder Woman movie - which seems to be on indefinite hold - the Justice League movie has also hit some snags. The official word is that the writers strike sidelined production. The real reason, negotiations for tax breaks with the Australian government fell through, and now the producers want to film the flick in Canada. The Canadian government is offering a virtual blank check - as long as the studios sign up at least one Canadian production/distribution company.
As for the actors: the producers let the cast options lapse. Than went around telling everyone that there's still work if you want it. This seems to be some sneaky ploy to string along the actors, without any actual legal commitment to them. So the producers are free to explore other alternatives. It's a "Heads I win, tails you loose" sort of arrangement that Hollywood studios seem to love to pull. In plain English, all bets are off, and we could see a completely new Justice League line up, assuming that the movie ever gets made. While I don't think that they will find anyone as good for Wonder Woman as Megan Gale, in the unfortunate event that the studios do something stupid (again) and let her go - Molly Culver might be the next best thing. Just dye her hair and insert blue contacts and voilà - instant amazon! Of course Daniella van Graas would make an interesting choice, too.
Finally here's the point of this long tale: Molly Culver's native American connection. Molly's grandmother is a full blooded Chickasaw/Choctaw. Ms. Culver is very proud of her ancestry, and participates in many traditional ceremonies, like the sweat lodge. Some of us break a sweat just looking at her - here's looking at you Molly!
Entertainment Trivia: STK - Does the "S" Stand For "Secret"?For a joint that's only recently opened, STK restaurant is attracting an all star clientèle, like Eva Longoria, Kate Beckinsale and Victoria Posh - Beckham. The trio were photographed (separately - they don't exactly hang out together) leaving STK, and not looking happy about their dining experience. For a peep at the pix, link to STK.
Post ScriptIf Molly Culver does decide to take a stab at playing Wonder Woman she might have some competition from another native american - amateur actress and fulltime comic geek Valerie Perez. Valerie is a California girl who's Myspace profile lists her as Native American. It also lists her as having a BSc in neuroscience as part of a pre med course, as working in IT, and she is currently branching out into 'online movies'. When ever she shows up at Comicon, in full Amazon regalia, jaws drop, and knees get weak.
